		<description>Farewell

February 4, 2023

Dearest looker-uppers,

We’re writing to bid you a fond farewell. For three years, there’s been nothing but beautiful Bay Area art on the billboard above 624 Irving Street and we’ve had such an incredible time working with the artists who made this possible:
Lindsey White, Katie Dorame, Oree Originol, David Bayus, Maria Guzmán Capron, Yétundé Olagbaju, Kate Rhoades, Emma Spertus, Saif Azzuz, Em Meine, Isaac Vazquez Avila, Lisa Rybovich Crallé, Joey Enos, Pieper, Margaret Tedesco, Cybele Lyle and Daniel J. Glendening

Thank you all! When we started Premiere Jr. we had no idea we’d be operating for the duration of a global pandemic. For us, it has been so important to create a space for this community to gather and make new work at a time when it was hard to access art and art spaces.

We loved seeing how artists responded to this weird assignment, stretching beyond their studio practices and familiar mediums to interesting and delightful results.
Thank you to Southern Exposure for the Alternative Exposure grant. Thank you to Arizmendi for all the sidewalk pizza. And thank you to everyone who stopped by a reception or paused in their daily lives to look up. We hope we provided a welcome interruption in the landscape to ponder something a little mysterious, a little fun and always beautiful.

We encourage others to do this kind of work. This format is for everyone! Recreate it!

If you have any interest in doing a project like this or putting art on a billboard in general, get in touch with us — we’ve learned a lot from our time working with Clear Channel and we would love to see more stuff like this in the world.

Much love to you all,
Zoë Taleporos &#38;amp; Sarah Hotchkiss

	About
Premiere Jr. was a 6-by-12-foot billboard affixed to the back of a much larger billboard above 624 Irving Street in San Francisco that “opened” in January 2020 and ran through January 2023. Bay Area artists were commissioned to create work for the billboard. Each show lasted approximately 2 months.

Premiere Jr. was best seen during daylight hours from the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and Irving Street, just outside the Fireside Bar.
Support for Premiere Jr. was provided by Southern Exposure’s Alternative Exposure Grant Program.Mailing List

	Katie Dorame
Into the Darkness,&#38;nbsp;from the series I am not Rebecca
April 26–June 21, 2020

Katie Dorame’s Into the Darkness comes from a black pastel on paper drawing, part of the series I am not Rebecca. In this body of work, Dorame inserts contemporary Indigenous actors into classic gothic horror films. In each drawing for I am not Rebecca, Dorame recategorizes Hollywood’s myth of Pocahontas in the horror genre. Into the Darkness places Q’orianka Kilcher (who starred in 2015’s&#38;nbsp;The New World) within 1961’s The Innocents.Katie Dorame is a visual artist born in Los Angeles, currently living and working in Oakland. Dorame’s work was recently exhibited at Shulamit Nazarian in Los Angeles, Guerrero Gallery in San Francisco, Form and Concept in Santa Fe and the de Saisset Museum in Santa Clara. She has attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe as an artist in residence, and contributed to SFMOMA’s Open Space blog. She received her MFA from the California College of the Arts and her BA from the University of California, Santa Cruz. She is an Indigenous artist of mixed descent, and a member of the Gabrielino/Tongva tribe of California.

	Oree Originol
Justice for Sean Monterrosa
July 9–August 23, 2020

On June 2, 2020, Sean Monterrosa, a 22-year-old resident of San Francisco, was fatally shot by Vallejo police officer Jarrett Tonn. Monterrosa was on his knees with his hands above his waist when Tonn fired five shots from inside his vehicle, through his own windshield.&#38;nbsp;His death occurred at the beginning of a national uprising, with protests around the world calling for justice and an end to police violence.

In 2014, Bay Area artist Oree Originol launched Justice For Our Lives, an open-source digital portrait series of people who have been killed by U.S. law enforcement. Inspired by Black Lives Matter activism, the black-and-white portraits have served as pivotal instruments in the fight for justice against state-sponsored terrorism. Often working with the families of those killed when selecting the source photograph, Originol distills images into simple line work that easily translate to reproducible templates. His images have been publicly disseminated worldwide in demonstrations, classrooms, art galleries, as street art and online.

You can download your own PDF of Originol’s poster for Sean Monterrosa here.

With permission from Sean Monterrosa’s family, Oree Originol and Premiere Jr. honor his memory. We thank the family and Kate Rhoades for their help in making this exhibition possible.

	David Bayus
Human-To-Be-InSeptember 10–October 25, 2020

Socially distant opening: Saturday, October 10, 2–4pmMeet at the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and Irving Street

Amoebas, viruses and bacteria present us with a utopian vision! We can choose to live in fear, or we can choose to actively participate in our own disease as teammates. A new “Human-To-Be-In” is upon us, where cooperation and trust in our protozoan brothers and sisters leads to a new world of peace and love. Join us! David Bayus’ Human-To-Be-In draws inspiration from self-referential advertising campaigns, cultish utopian movements, and the current pandemic. Using images of previous Premiere Jr. installations, he rendered the barnacle-like billboard and its surroundings in 3D-modeling software to half scale. No detail was ignored, including dents in metal frames, half-peeling signage and the traces of bird droppings. Bayus then placed his “sculptures,” psychedelic renderings of amoebas and other organic forms, into the meta environment. In this scenario, these living things are advertising themselves, urging passersby to welcome them into their human bodies and create a new, parasitic ecosystem.
David Bayus lives and works in San Francisco. His cross-disciplinary practice centers on experimental filmmaking with a focus on the dualistic relationship between science and spirituality. He is a co-founder of BASEMENT art collective, based in the Mission District. He received his MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2010.

Make it All BetterNovember 6–December 27, 2020

Socially distant opening: Saturday, November 21, 3–5pmMeet at the southwest corner of 7th Avenue and Irving Street (the Fireside is back in action!)Premiere Jr. is so dang happy to present the fifth billboard installation above 624 Irving Street, Make it All Better by Maria Guzmán Capron. For Maria, this was an opportunity to make weird art during a surreal moment. If a strangely humanoid cat creature can casually groom itself on a San Francisco billboard, truly anything we imagine is possible right now. Maria’s collage-like approach to the image of Make it All Better transforms a creature’s self care into an absurdist, magic realism PSA. Designed before the 2020 general election to suit whatever outcome might transpire, Maria’s billboard is a form of visual comfort and a call to action—to take care of ourselves and the world around us.

Maria Guzmán Capron (b. 1981 in Milan, Italy to Colombian and Peruvian parents) lives and works in Oakland, CA. She received an MFA from California College of the Arts in 2015 and her BFA from the University of Houston in 2004. Recent exhibitions include Being Human Is Hard at pt.2 Gallery, Oakland, CA; Female Trouble 2 at CULT Aimee Friberg Exhibitions, San Francisco, CA; Body Spray at Buffalo Institute for Contemporary Art, Buffalo, NY; Don’t Eat Me at Deli Gallery in Brooklyn, NYC; Through Her Eye at Mana Contemporary in Chicago, IL; and Snail Shell, open this month at pt.2 Gallery, Oakland, CA. She is a cofounder and past member of CTRL+SHFT Collective, an exhibition space and 13 studios located in West Oakland operating with an emphasis on collaborating with underrepresented arts communities, including women artists, artists of color, and queer and non-binary artists. She also works as a full-time mother and part-time facilitator at NIAD Art Center, a progressive art studio helping more than 60 artists with disabilities create art.

	Yétundé Olagbaju
joy that’s a circle no. 1February 2–March 21, 2021
Premiere Jr. opens the new year with a work by artist Yétundé Olagbaju, drawn from a series of journal entries created in 2017, when they were exploring notions of birthright, lineage and inheritance. The images—a carved statue and a branch of blossoms—come from books given to Olagbaju by their mother and form an echo across the pages. “The questions I pose while looking at these two images are significant as well,” Olagbaju writes, “they ask the viewer (especially Black folks like me) to consider where they inherited their joy from (not just our trauma) and how that joy might be cyclical in their lineage.”Yétundé Olagbaju is an artist and maker currently residing in Oakland, California. They utilize video, sculpture, action, gesture and performance as through-lines for inquiries regarding Black labor, legacy and processes of healing. They are rooted in the need to understand history, the people that made it, the myths surrounding them and how their own body is implicated in history’s timeline. They have shown work and projects with Oakland Museum of California, Portland Institute of Contemporary Art, Pt. 2 Gallery, Southern Exposure, SOMArts Cultural Center, Untitled Art Fair, Art Basel, and more. They hold an MFA from Mills College and are the recipient of the inaugural Nancy Cook Fellowship, the Murphy Cadogan Award, and the Jay DeFeo Award. They are currently in residence at Headlands Center for the Arts.
