We are young but getting old before our time
We’ll leave the TV and the radio behind
Don’t you wonder what we’ll find
Steppin’ out tonight?

“Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, 1982

A cartoon cloud hangs in an otherwise blue sky. From its fluffy center a leg appears wearing jeans and a sneaker, signaling that a person is about to emerge. Referencing Bay Area funksters, Zap Comix, pot-heads, iCloud, and San Francisco’s legendary fog, Lisa Rybovich Crallé’s Steppin’ Out presents a hopeful vision of post-pandemic life in which we collectively step out of the clouds into a brighter future.

Lisa Rybovich Crallé is an interdisciplinary artist based in the San Francisco Bay Area. Her work has been presented at Cornell University, the Manetti Shrem Museum, the Detroit Institute of Arts, Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Berkeley Art Museum, Syracuse University, Mills College, di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art, and Land and Sea, among other venues. She has been an artist in residence at the Vermont Studio Center, Ox-Bow, Arteles, and the Bubec Sculpture Studio. In addition to her studio practice, Lisa teaches at Berkeley City College and co-organizes Heavy Breathing, a series of experimental artist-led movement seminars.

Steppin’ Out was reviewed by Theadora Walsh in the Variable West newsletter, “Cliff Notes.”
