We are young but getting old before our time
We’ll leave the TV and the radio behind
Don’t you wonder what we’ll find
Steppin’ out tonight?
“Steppin’ Out” by Joe Jackson, 1982
A cartoon cloud hangs in an otherwise blue sky. From its fluffy center a leg appears wearing jeans and a sneaker, signaling that a person is about to emerge. Referencing Bay Area funksters, Zap Comix, pot-heads, iCloud, and San Francisco’s legendary fog, Lisa Rybovich Crallé’s Steppin’ Out presents a hopeful vision of post-pandemic life in which we collectively step out of the clouds into a brighter future.
